L’Europe vote !
The European elections have officially started! Several countries offer the possibility of voting in advance – in Estonia you can vote online since Monday 3. In the Netherlands it was election day on Thursday 6. Today, June 7, the Irish and Czechs go to the polls with the rest of the voters. Europe followed suit this weekend.
In total, around 360 million Europeans are called to the polls to elect the 720 members of the next European Parliament.
Two million young people aged 16 and 17 will be able to vote for the first time – the voting age is set at 16 in Belgium, Germany, Malta and Austria and at 17 in Greece. In all other countries, you must be 18 years old to vote.
Information on how and when to vote is available on the elections website.
Estimates (from 8:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. CEST) and provisional results (from 11:15 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. CEST) of the elections will be updated in real time on the European Election Results Site.
Cover the European elections live
Media can use images of elections taking place in all EU member states from EBS or the Media Center. Images of a Dutch polling station installed in a windmill are available here. EU citizens have already voted on the island of Svartsö in Sweden or on a ferry in Kemiönsaari (Finland). EU citizens from fourteen countries also had the opportunity to vote by mail, like the Greek. Election footage will be posted online throughout the weekend – including recordings of the main candidates and group leaders voting.
Days and nights of the elections in Brussels
The European Parliament in Brussels was completely transformed to accommodate over 1,000 media representatives from more than 90 countries. The hemicycle is transformed into a giant press room. 700 workspaces are provided for journalists, 125 standing positions have been prepared, including 66 in the hemicycle on three levels covering 420 m2 and 185 high-speed lines for transmission are planned.
Practical information for journalists as well as an overview of the day and night elections are available here.
