On one side of the mall, you had some local heroes trying to help a community shop for Christmas presents for needy kids.

On the other side, you had some criminal types doing a little Christmas shopping of their own.

In the movies, the heroes usually prevail without getting hurt. That doesn’t always happen in real life, though.

These jewelry store  robbers were not just armed with hammers to smash display cases; they had something else to use against any heroes, including police, who tried to stop them.

Pepper spray.

And it worked, too.

These masked cowards were thinking ahead. If they didn’t have this weapon, they may have gotten caught.

THESE COPS AND SECURITY GUARD WERE HEROES

York Regional Police officers, some in uniform and some in civilian wear, were at the Upper Canada Mall — at 17600 Yonge St. in Newmarket — for the annual Holiday Heroes kick-off event. As soon as they heard a jewelry store was under duress, the cops, along with security, high-tailed it over there.

But the bad guys were prepared for something like this.

“During the incident, one of our officers (not in uniform) and a security guard confronted the suspects, who were armed with hammers,” said Const. Lisa Moskaluk.

They security officer and police officer tried to stop the robbery and make arrests.

“An aerosol irritant was used against them as they tried to intervene,” said Moskaluk. “Both suffered minor injuries and have been treated; they are OK. An unknown number of suspects fled in an awaiting vehicle, which was near the store exit.”

They now believe it was five suspects who fled.

The officer, his fellow officers and the security guard also had success, too. After they heard the cop yell “stop police,” they got these slugs to scurry like the rats they are. They didn’t get as much out of this Peoples Jewellers as they had hoped. Thank the holiday heroes for that.

DOUBLE STANDARDS

There are, however, such double standards on display in a story like this.

If the police were to physically hurt the armed bandits in the middle of a jewelry store robbery, the SIU would be called immediately, and it would be the cops under investigation.

But when it’s them allegedly harmed by the thugs, there is no outside inquiry. They get away with it and these criminals understand that.

They know the rules that apply to those who are deployed with the task of catching them, don’t apply to the criminal element.

And while the bandits got away with stolen goods, the cops and the security people went back to work trying to make sure families who don’t have much, will have a decent Christmas. Const. James Dickson of YRP said that “launched 29 years ago, Holiday Heroes has helped 109,000 individuals and families in need.”

They do it legally. No stealing. No assaulting or terrorizing. Just old fashioned community spirit.

CAN YOU HELP?

If you want to help them reach their goal of $250,000 in monetary and gift card donations, or give a family some toys, clothes, transit passes or baby food, donate online at yrp.ca/hhdonate.

While there are some who would pepper spray our brave cops or security people as they try to keep a business and a mall safe, there are others who will do what they can to help them.

Perhaps someone knows the identity of these robbers and will drop a dime to Crimestoppers and help police complete this arrest.

If it happens, hopefully they will be charged — in addition to robbing a jewellery store — with assaulting police and security personnel.

We have to take care of our holiday heroes.
