:: The Philippines’ Kanlaon Volcano erupts with an ash cloud 2.5 miles high
:: April 8, 2025
: Canlaon City, Philippines
Thermal camera footage also released by PHIVOLCS showed pyroclastic density currents — fast-moving flows of hot gas and volcanic material — cascading down the southern slopes of the volcano.
The eruption began at 5:51 a.m. local time (2151 GMT April 7), according to a post on PHIVOLCS official X account, which has maintained an Alert Level 3 over the volcano, warning of potential further explosive activity.
Although the majority of local residents were already evacuated last year in anticipation for the eruption, authorities have urged residents near the volcano to remain vigilant and avoid the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) permanent danger zone.
