August 3, 2024 marks the Yazidi Tragedy Remembrance Day, commemorating a chapter in Iraq’s past. Ten years ago, on this date in 2014, Daesh (ISIS) terrorists perpetrated atrocities against the Yazidi community in Sinjar, resulting in the brutal murder of 3,000 innocent civilians and the abduction of 7,000 women and children. Many of those captured endured slavery and were tragically used as human shields during the conflict.
A statement issued by the High Representative of the European Union welcomed the efforts of citizens and security forces in the fight against Daesh with the strong support of international partners. The EU has become an ally in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
The Yazidis, a cultural and heritage community, have played a vital role in Iraq’s social landscape for generations. Even though ten years have passed since these heinous acts, they continue to face obstacles, particularly in their return to Sinjar. Challenges such as security risks and limited access to services hamper the repatriation of displaced persons.
The EU statement stressed the urgent importance for the Iraqi Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to honour their commitments set out in the Sinjar Agreement. This agreement plays a role in improving living conditions in the region and supporting the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Recognizing the challenges faced by returning Yazidis, the EU welcomed the government’s efforts to provide reconstruction assistance, including housing, education services and employment opportunities. The EU committed to providing assistance to help Yazidis transition from IDP camps to their communities.
In addition, UNITAD was commended for its work in collecting evidence for prosecution in EU member states. Preserving this evidence is essential, not to bring justice to the Yazidi victims, but to global accountability efforts against Daesh atrocities.
On the anniversary of the Yazidi tragedy, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to support the Yazidi community. Recognised that their journey towards recovery and justice is ongoing. Survivors of the ordeal among the Yazidis are still waiting for the recognition and accountability they rightly deserve. The urgency of finding inclusive, safe and dignified solutions for the displaced is more crucial than ever.
