The matter is not over with The Hague: the Security Council is meeting for an urgent meeting on "Israeli genocide"

The UN Security Council will meet on January 31 for an emergency meeting to give binding force the verdict International Court of Justice in The Hague in the case of South Africa against Israel. The initiative comes from Algeria, which at the beginning of 2024 took the place of a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

Despite the fact that Israel has not expressed any intention to ignore the court’s decisions, Algeria and countries “sympathizing” with its initiative want to consolidate anti-Israeli aspects in the verdict so that they can then be used for other purposes and claims. For example, the court’s demand for Israel to “avoid acts of genocide,” having received legitimation from the Security Council, may be perceived as a statement that Israel allowed acts of genocide, and is now being asked not to do so.

In a communique issued on January 26 by the Algerian Foreign Ministry, it was stated that we are talking about “numerous crimes of a genocidal nature committed by Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip.”

“Algeria believes that the decision of the International Court means the beginning of the end of the era of impunity that the Israeli occupation has long enjoyed, oppressing the Palestinian people and suppressing all their legitimate rights,” the communiqué emphasizes.

As Israeli experts note, duality solutions The International Court in The Hague, which, on the one hand, did not prohibit Israel from continuing the war, but on the other hand, did not reject South Africa’s claim with accusations of genocide, and also accepted six injunctions regarding the situation in Gaza.

In this regard, it is also noted that the very discussion of Israel’s “jurisdiction” for genocide has a very serious impact on the image of the state and can be used to justify boycotts and sanctions. The UN Security Council, by adopting a resolution at Algeria’s request, will only speed up this process.
