During the election of the vice-presidents of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EUROLAT), the left was prevented from recovering the position of 2nd vice-president thanks to a maneuver by right-wing groups. The far-right “Patriots for Europe” nominated their own candidate, while the center-right EPP also put forward a candidate. In the second round of voting, the left-wing candidate, João Oliveira, was finally defeated.
“The maneuver that prevented our group from winning back the position of 2nd vice-president of EUROLAT will not stop those of us who denounce the EU’s intervention policies in Latin America,” said the MEP from left João Oliveira (PCP, Portugal).
The co-presidents of the left, Manon Aubry (La France Insoumise, France) and Martin Schirdewan (DIE LINKE, Germany), added: “The right of the European Parliament has violated the political balance to prevent us from reaching the positions that we we occupy legitimately. The Sanitary Cordon alone should apply to the far right, which undermines democracy. This is clearly an attempt to marginalize voices denouncing EU complicity in the violent and destabilizing actions of far-right forces. We will continue to fight against the neoliberal and militarist agenda increasingly pushed by the EU.”
