Oregon researchers found that harvesting tall fescue at a higher cutterbar height — 28 centimeters (11 inches) instead of 5 centimeters (2 inches) — reduced the quantity of annual bluegrass collected with the seed crop. The trials, described as preliminary, showed the higher cut lowered contamination captured with harvested material while not producing a consistent reduction in tall fescue seed yield.
The presence of annual bluegrass in fescue seed lots increases the burden on seed-cleaning operations and can raise production costs for seed growers and processors. By lowering the amount of foreign seed entering harvest equipment, the higher cutting height led to fewer contaminants in samples taken from the harvested crop, suggesting a potential reduction in downstream cleaning effort and expense.
Adoption of a higher harvest height requires attention to practical factors on the farm. Equipment calibration, swathing technique and field conditions at harvest influence how crop and weed material are gathered. Because the yield impact was not uniform across all trial plots, the effects are likely to depend on local weed pressure, fescue variety and seasonal conditions. Growers are therefore advised to test the higher cutterbar setting on a limited scale before changing standard harvest practice.
The findings offer a potentially simple agronomic adjustment to reduce seed contamination that could benefit both producers and seed processors if validated broadly. Given the preliminary nature of the research, further trials across different regions, cultivars and management systems would clarify how reliably higher cutting heights deliver cleaner seed and what trade-offs, if any, emerge under varying conditions. Extension services and seed industry stakeholders can help translate these results into field-level guidance if subsequent studies corroborate the initial observations.
