Are you tired of digging through your drawer to find the right charger for your phone? The EU is here for you! Since the EU has standardized charging ports for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices, all new devices sold in the EU must now support USB-C charging. This will reduce the number of chargers you need to purchase, help minimize electronic waste and simplify your daily life.
Here are some advantages of the common charger:
Increase consumer convenience: You can charge your cell phone and other similar electronic devices with a single USB-C charger, regardless of the device brand. Reduce e-waste: Discarded and unused chargers account for approximately 11,000 tonnes of e-waste per year. The new rules encourage the reuse of chargers, which helps reduce the environmental footprint. Save money: You can now buy new electronics without a charger. This will save consumers around €250 million per year on unnecessary charger purchases. Harmonized fast charging technology: New rules help ensure that the charging speed is the same when using a compatible charger for a device.
The EU Common Charger Directive was approved by the Council of the EU in October 2022. Manufacturers were given a transition period to adjust their designs and ensure compliance. From December 28, 2024, the rules apply to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, earphones, headsets, video game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and headphones sold in the EU. From April 28, 2026, they will also apply to laptops.
