Michael Olise Is the World Cup’s Last True Soccer-Boot Romantic

If you’ve watched any of the World Cup over the past few weeks (and if not, what’s going on, mate? Everything OK?), you’ve probably noticed that everyone’s basically wearing the exact same football boots. Then there’s Michael Olise.

While most of the world’s best players are wearing whatever their shoe deal requires them to wear, the London-born French winger has spent the tournament doing something incredibly rare in elite football: wearing boots because he actually likes them. That sounds basic enough, sure, but pro sports don’t really work like that anymore.

Olise has hit the pitch in the 2015’s Nike Mercurial Superfly 4, 2024’s Superfly 10 and New Balance Tekela V4+, and even the Adidas F50 Tunit from 2006, which is old enough to buy a drink at the pub. According to the specialist account Boots Culture, in Olise’s first season at Bayern, the 24-year-old wore 15 (!) different pairs in training. But his absolute favorite boot model remains, without a doubt, the Nike Hypervenom Phantom III.

The Hypervenom Phantom III was first released back in 2017 and has long since been discontinued. Most players would’ve moved on years ago—sponsors would have made sure of that. But Olise just keeps finding ways back to it, hunting down old pairs and bringing them back into circulation like a lad searching eBay for a jacket he regrets not buying in three different colors.
