Two clubs that have become both domestic and European heavyweights following significant foreign investment, Manchester City and Chelsea are now among the world’s elite clubs.
They have, rather unsurprisingly, played out some phenomenal duels in recent years at the top of the game, with Man City having enjoyed the bulk of success in an engaging fixture.
However, despite Chelsea’s recent woes in this clash, they triumphed in the most significant fixture between the sides, lifting the Champions League in 2021 after a 1-0 final victory over the Cityzens.
Here are the results of the last ten meetings between Man City and Chelsea.
Given how dire Chelsea have been for much of the 2023/24 campaign, few expected them to come away from the Etihad with any dignity left in February. However, a surprisingly stubborn defensive display helped the Blues earn a hard-fought point in Manchester, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side rising to the occasion.
Chelsea were the stronger attacking force from the off and took the lead just before the break with a well-executed counter-attack. It was Man City’s former employee Raheem Sterling who converted a swift breakaway, slotting home Nicolas Jackson’s pass with little fuss.
However, Man City threw everything at Chelsea in the second half and their persistence eventually paid off, with Rodri’s deflected strike levelling proceedings just seven minutes from time.
Few Premier League games have matched the drama and chaos of the eight-goal thriller between these teams in November of the 2023/24 campaign. In the end, nothing could separate the two sides, with former Man City man Cole Palmer scoring the equalising penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time for the hosts.
A soft spot-kick gifted Man City the early lead but Thiago Silva’s header drew Chelsea level just four minutes later. Sterling then punished his old side once again with a trademark tap-in at the far post, although Manuel Akanji would equalise before the break in a thrilling end-to-end affair.
A scrappy Haaland effort put City back in front but Jackson would grab Chelsea’s third 20 minutes later. Another deflected Rodri strike seemed to have won it for the visitors in the 86th minute, but Palmer’s well-taken late penalty meant the spoils were shared at Stamford Bridge.
Having been crowned the 2022/23 Premier League champions the previous day following Arsenal’s defeat, a heavily rotated Man City celebrated a third successive title with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.
Julian Alvarez produced the only goal of the game after just 12 minutes, producing an excellent finish from close range, but the result mattered little as the home fans prepared themselves for an almighty party.
Meanwhile for Chelsea, it was a result that left them sat in 12th with just two games to play.
Labelling Man City’s FA Cup third round victory over Chelsea as routine would be an understatement, with the eventual champions of the competition easing to a comfortable 4-0 victory against the Blues.
Riyad Mahrez’s strike, Alvarez’s penalty and Phil Foden’s effort put Man City three goals up and out of reach at half-time, with Man City’s Algerian winger scoring another spot kick five minutes from time to put the icing on the cake.
Man City were drawn against Arsenal in the next round, dispatching Mikel Arteta’s side en route to winning the competition and completing an important part of their treble.
Just three days before their FA Cup humiliation, Chelsea had fallen to a narrow defeat against Man City in the Premier League. Injuries meant that the Blues had to work extra hard to keep the champions out, but their resistance was broken in the 63rd minute.
It was Mahrez who would prove decisive again, converting Jack Grealish’s far-post cross to earn Man City a vital three points on their road to glory. Chelsea had shown plenty of fighting spirit at Stamford Bridge, but walked away with nothing to show for it.
