Lake Forest School District officials said a gun was found on the floor of a staff bathroom of a middle school in Harrington.
The gun was found on the evening of April 9, according to a letter signed by Superintendent Steven Lucas. An employee found the gun in the male staff bathroom within a faculty lounge during routine building maintenance at W.T. Chipman Middle School. An investigation revealed the gun belonged to someone who was authorized to carry it at school.
Harrington police said in a Facebook post that the gun did not belong to the school resource officer, who is employed by the police. Police said no children were in harm’s way.
It is the latest incident of haphazard behavior involving guns at Delaware schools. A school bus driver and member of Aspira High School’s Culture and Climate Team near Newark was hurt after a gun he was carrying went off inside of the school on April 10.

In 2024, two incidents involving accidental gun discharges happened within two months of each other. A gun carried by a constable at Stanton Middle School went off in a hallway in November. Weeks later, a gun went off in a staff room in the Milford School District. No one was injured in either incident.
