Those cars were originally valued at $70,000, but since then, developer Fisker has faced considerable difficulty financing its operations. Now, the company has petitioned a bankruptcy judge to allow the sale of more than 3,000 Ocean electric SUVs for about $14,000 per vehicle to a leasing company.
The move, if approved, would allow Fisker to sell 3,321 electric vehicles to New York-based American Lease for $46.25 million, according to a court filing Tuesday.
The electric vehicle startup, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, has faced significant logistical challenges in selling its Ocean SUVs. Earlier this year, Fisker shifted to a dealer-partner model after draining significant financial resources.
Originally, some versions of the Ocean SUV cost around $70,000. As the company faced financial difficulties, it reduced the price of its most affordable variant to around $25,000 to generate capital and meet its debts.
On May 30, two weeks before Fisker filed for Chapter 11, American Lease agreed to purchase 2,100 Ocean EVs. The offer was later expanded to include all 3,321 available vehicles.
American Lease, which provides vehicles to rideshare drivers in and around New York City, supports the city’s mandate to transition its rideshare fleet to zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2030.
