May 22, 2024 – The European Fact-Checking Standards Network, in association with participating member organizations, launched the Climate Facts Europe Database, supported by the European Climate Foundation. The goal of the project is to increase collaboration between countries to detect and debunk climate misinformation while promoting access to verified climate information.
Climate facts in Europe
Climate Facts Europe is a multi-faceted project, which includes a public database for the European public to consult fact-checks related to climate disinformation. The project also establishes an alert system to sound the alarm to participating fact-checking organizations and the European Climate Foundation regarding cross-border viral climate disinformation campaigns and discourse.
Additionally, seven organizations selected from participating members will produce four detailed reports using cross-border data that will be published approximately once a month and covering a range of climate-related topics.
“We have already seen in recent months that climate-related misinformation is one of the major topics in the run-up to the European elections, affecting not only the political debate but also conversations on separate issues such as public health or civil liberties. With facts about climate Europe we will be able to analyze this phenomenon in depth and sound the alarm when we detect the emergence of false narratives,” said Carlos Hernández-Echevarría, president of the governance body of the EFCSN.
In the meantime, stay informed on climate-related misinformation trends by subscribing to the EFCSN newsletter where we will share climate misinformation stories identified and debunked using the database.
