Cate Blanchett’s had an incredible career, and yet somehow she may have just given one of her best performances yet in Steven Soderbergh’s twisty spy thriller Black Bag.
Of course, she was also nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her incredible performance in the 2022 film Tár. She didn’t win, but that’s OK — she’s already got two trophies, one for her Best Supporting Actress turn in Martin Scorsese’s 2004 film The Aviator and a Best Actress Oscar for Blue Jasmine in 2014.
In short, she’s had quite a run — and it sounds like it might be coming to a close soon, if her recent comments to the Standard are any indication. In an interview with the publication, Cate admitted that she’s considering hanging it up for good, and she’s totally serious, too.
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it,” Cate proclaimed. “I am serious about giving up acting. (There are) a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
Cate cited the scrutiny of being in the public eye as her main reason why she desires to step away from the profession. “When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud,” she said. “I’m not that person. I make more sense in motion – it’s been a long time to remotely get comfortable with the idea of being photographed.”
“I’ve always felt like I’m on the periphery of things, so I’m always surprised when I belong anywhere. I go with curiosity into whatever environment that I’m in, not expecting to be accepted or welcomed. I’ve spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable.”
Hey, you gotta do what’s best for you — although I won’t be the only one to say that a world without future Cate Blanchett performances is a world that’s a little less good than the one we’ve got now. We’ll see what happens!
