The Zurich Film Festival will hand Canadian composer and three-time Academy Award winner Howard Shore its Career Achievement Award during this year’s edition, which runs October 3-13.
The award will be presented to Shore on October 5 during the festival’s Cinema in Concert. Shore will also preside over the jury of the 12th International Film Music Competition (IFMC).
Shore is best known for his music for the Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, for which he won multiple Oscars for Best Original Score. His other credits include The Departed, Hugo, The Fly, The Aviator, Se7en, The Silence Of The Lambs, Philadelphia, and Gangs Of New York.
“Howard Shore is one of the greatest film composers of our time,” said Christian Jungen, Artistic Director of the Zurich Film Festival. “He has written iconic scores for milestones in film history such as Lord Of The Rings or The Silence Of The Lambs. He is a musician who listens well before composing and puts his melodies entirely at the service of the stories. He is also distinguished by his enormous versatility and can elevate films in any genre with his music. We owe intense and unforgettable cinematic experiences to Shore’s music.”
Shore added: “I am honored to have been invited to the 20th anniversary of the Zurich Film Festival to receive the Career Achievement Award and to be the jury president of the 12th International Film Music Competition. I am looking forward to the ‘Cinema in Concert’ gala with the great Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich conducted by Frank Strobel celebrating the art of music in films.”
