Artemis II Astronauts Watched ‘Project Hail Mary’ in Quarantine Before Blasting Off to Space on Moon Mission: ‘That Was a Real Treat’

Artemis II astronaut Jeremy Hansen is giving Amazon MGM’s “Project Hail Mary” two thumbs up.

Hansen, along with fellow Artemis II astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, got to see the blockbuster before they set out on their own space expedition; the four-person crew is currently on a 10-day journey around the Moon on NASA’s Orion spacecraft, the furthest a crew has traveled from Earth before.

“We were all really lucky. We got to watch Hail Mary when we were in quarantine,” said Hansen when asked about what message he would give Ryan Gosling, who stars in the film as Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher and molecular biologist tasked with a space mission to save humanity. “That was a real treat that they sent us a link to view that at home with our families, getting us ready to go on our own space adventure.”

“I would just say to Ryan, art imitates science and vice versa, it seems,” he continued. “He did a great job in that movie. It’s wonderful to see people really leaning into those roles. I thought it was just such an inspirational example, and somebody who goes out there and just gets what was done to save humanity. It’s a pretty extraordinary example that we can all follow. We all thought that movie was really uplifting and inspiring.”

Ahead of their liftoff, Gosling recorded a video for the astronauts, sending his best wishes to the Artemis II crew. The mission is scheduled to come back down to Earth along the coast of San Diego at approximately 5:07 p.m. PDT on Friday, April 10.

Since its March 20 debut, “Project Hail Mary” has been a box office hit, grossing a worldwide total of more than $420 million. The film was adapted from author Andy Weir’s 2021 bestselling science fiction novel of the same name.
