Young manta rays keep to coastal waters before braving the open ocean

Giant manta ray pups spend their earliest life stages close to shore before entering the open ocean, a behaviour that contrasts sharply with the species’ adult stature. Adult giant manta rays can reach up to nine metres in length, with a disc width of about seven metres, and may weigh as much as 2,000 kg. These dimensions leave mature individuals with few natural predators, but juveniles move through a very different ecological landscape.

During the juvenile phase, young mantas cannot rely on bulk or size to deter predators. They face threats from the open ocean that include several species of shark and killer whales (orcas). This vulnerability helps explain why pups are commonly observed in shallower, coastal waters before venturing further offshore, where encounters with large pelagic predators are more frequent.

The reliance on nearshore areas during early life stages has implications for how the species navigates the transition from sheltered coastal habitats to the open ocean. Coastal zones that host juvenile mantas thus form a critical part of the species’ life cycle and deserve attention in scientific studies of population dynamics and habitat use. Greater knowledge of where and when young mantas concentrate along coasts will inform efforts to monitor and protect these life stages without prejudging specific management actions.

The contrast between the mantas’ eventual size — reaching adulthood at around eight to ten years — and their early susceptibility to predation highlights a prolonged period of risk in the species’ life history. Understanding the spatial and ecological links between coastal nursery areas and the open ocean is key to building a clearer picture of survival rates and long-term population prospects for giant manta rays, and to situating this species within broader discussions of marine life and habitat conservation.
